Klosterneuburg Monastry

Description

Welcome to Klosterneuburg Monastry and the Order of the Augustinian Canons!

In an eventful history spanning nine centuries, Klosterneuburg Monastery has developed into a religious, pastoral, scientific, cultural and economic centre.

Since its foundation in the 12th century, Klosterneuburg Monastery has had a multitude of vocations fulfilled by the canons and the staff in a variety of areas.

For almost 900 years, the Augustinian Canons of Klosterneuburg Monastery have also fulfilled cultural tasks. Cultural commitment has been inherent in all aspects of their ministry. In connection with its cultural legacy, the monastery has numerous obligations. One aspect of its cultural mission is the conservation of unique art treasures in its museum and the maintenance of the building fabric. Already in the late 18th century, a Cabinet of Art and Rarities was founded at the monastery, with the purpose of systematically preserving art and craft objects which had been collected over centuries.
The other component of its cultural mission is the communication of culture in the sense of highlighting and presenting art in a modern way. From its beginnings right up to the present, the monastery has been in close contact with artists and is a centre and showcase of contemporary art.
